The E2E Foundation has partnered with US-based Ecocity Builders' Urbinsight project to teach a social data mapping workshop to students at La Universidad Nacional of Colombia.
The 25 students enrolled in the course will learn geographic information system (GIS) for social data mapping with hands-on experience with community members in La Comuna 8 in Medellin, Colombia. The data they provide will offer real-time insights into important social issues in La Comuna 8.
E2E's work in La Comuna 8 focuses on a recycling and waste management project. It aims to improve the lives of informal recyclers who are subjected to long hours, low pay, health hazards and stigmatization by the community. The Urbinsights project in Medellin will focus on recycling and waste management data in La Comuna 8.
In collaboration with the Alcaldía (Mayor's Office) of Medellin, the project will also offer a two-day GIS training course for professionals, teaching them technical skills to integrate data mapping and -use into public service initiatives and development projects.
Teryn Wolfe, Executive Director of the E2E Foundation, said: “Social and environmental issues – especially in urban environments – are dynamic and often difficult to monitor. This project is extremely important because it allows us to monitor social changes in real time, and effectively use that data to adjust our activities so that our work has the highest possible impact.”
